These aren't bootcamps, and there won't be any "beastings", so we won't expect you to be able to run a marathon or do 100's of press ups.
However, we will expect you to be reasonably mobile, and be able to get up from the ground unaided.
We'll be honest with you - 6 sessions is a really short time in which to learn a skill that will guarantee to give you the ability to defend yourself, especially given the amount of variables that come in to play when it comes to personal safety.
However, within that time frame, we would expect that your knowledge and understanding about what to look for, what/who to avoid and what to do in order to escape will be enhanced. Plus, you'll learn some principles and drills that will help you if you do get into a difficult situation.
We suggest loose fitting clothes, such as a tracksuit, with comfortable shoes/trainers.
When we train, we respectfully request that you remove all jewellery such as rings and necklaces. If you can't remove rings, we ask that you cover them up with tape.
Each of the weekly sessions are held in North Essex, close to Chelmsford, Colchester and Braintree and easily accessible from the the A12 and the A120. There is plenty of on-site parking.
The course consists of 6 weekly, 1 hour sessions and the cost is £50 per person.
Payment to be made in full, prior to the first lesson. We regretfully cannot transfer or refund any sessions that you cannot make.
The minimum age for participants is 18 years old, however, if you are aged 16/17, providing you have a parent/guardian also participating on the course, then that will be fine.
As for a maximum age? Absolutely not!
I don't have any military experience, nor experience with the police. However, as a result of training over a number of years, whilst I do not profess to being an expert, I do have a good understanding of what does and what doesn't work for the average person on the street. As a result, I teach skills that most people can learn in a short period of time.
If you are after someone specifically with a military background, however, then let me know, as I know a number of very good instructors.
As good as MMA is, this is most definitely not an MMA class.
Rather, given the time that we will have, the 6 week course is an introduction to the subject of personal safety and, as a result, we spend a lot of the time on pre-fight soft skills, learning how to avoid trouble rather than practising left-right-clinch combinations.
However, saying that, we do also include a number of principles and drills that will help if you do get into a physical confrontation.
If you want to train in MMA, though, again, let us know and we'll point you in the right direction.
Depending on your opinion, the term "self defence" is either thought of as a means of fighting back with a set of moves/strikes, used in the protection of others or oneself as a result of being attacked, or it is simply a legal term used to describe a justifiable use of physical force. In either event, it is about "responding" to a particular scenario.
The term "self protection", on the other hand, includes those physical skills, but also includes "soft" skills such as awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, body language, deception, etc. - tools which hopefully allow you to avoid the physical altercation in the first place.

We look forward to hearing from you.
Given the nature of the course, we are focussed on helping people that are concerned about their safety (or that of a loved one) and that doesn't have any previous experience in martial arts.
People that don't have the time or commitment to attend classes on a week-in, week-out basis; individuals that may be planning a trip abroad; students that may be going off to university for the first time; the average Joe Bloggs that just wants to stay safe in their everyday lives.
Pretty much everyone, really.
Bees are amazing creatures, and in a lot of ways, are quite similar to us humans. They build hives in which they live; they live in communities with thousands of others; and they are fiercely protective!
Whether it is the Japanese honeybees that gather together, hide, then ambush any would-be attacker; or the giant honeybee swarms that prevent a potential attack through the use of deception, cunningly flipping their abdomens at the same time, producing a shimmer effect that makes a hornet think twice about attacking; they know how to protect themselves, using brains rather than brawn.
And of course, they still have the nasty sting in their tail if all else fails!
